My cupboard used to look like a supplement shop.
2008-2013.
Literally 20+ bottles and tubs.
Pre-workout. Post-workout. Fat burners. Greens powder. BCAAs. Creatine. Glutamine. CLA. L-Carnitine. Multivitamins. Fish oil. Luicine.
If a supplement company claimed it would help me build muscle or lose fat, I bought it.
I’d spend $150+ per month on supplements.
I justified it…
“It’s an investment in my physique.”
I was convinced that supplements were the difference between good and great results.
That if I just found the RIGHT combination, I’d finally build the body I wanted.
The supplement industry is brilliant at this.
They sell hope in a bottle.
“Just take this pill and you’ll burn fat while you sleep!”
“This powder will help you build muscle 2x faster!”
“Our proprietary blend activates your fat-burning genes!”
All marketed with incredible before/after photos.
Testimonials from jacked guys claiming this supplement changed everything.
Scientific-sounding language about metabolic pathways and hormone optimisation.
And desperate people like me?
We buy it.
Because we want to believe there’s a shortcut.
But here’s what I learned after $1000s wasted:
Supplements don’t fix a broken foundation.
Let me explain with a metaphor…
Imagine your body is a car engine.
And food is the petrol (fuel) you put in.
If your engine is worn out and not running properly…
You can try different types of petrol all day long.
Premium unleaded. Super unleaded. High-octane racing fuel.
But the engine still won’t run well.
Your body is the same.
If your metabolic “engine” isn’t working correctly, no supplement will fix it.
Not fat burners. Not diet shakes. Not “metabolism boosters.”
The problem isn’t the fuel (food).
It’s the engine (metabolism).
You need to fix the engine first.
What does “fixing the engine” mean?
It means improving your metabolic flexibility.
Which is your body’s ability to efficiently use both carbs and fats for energy.
And that comes down to insulin sensitivity.
When you have poor insulin sensitivity (insulin resistance):
- Your cells can’t absorb nutrients properly
- Your body stores food as fat instead of using it for energy
- You feel tired even though you have stored fuel available
- You crave carbs constantly
- Fat loss is nearly impossible
No amount of fat burner pills will overcome insulin resistance.
No diet shake will fix poor metabolic flexibility.
You’re treating the symptom (fat storage) not the cause (broken metabolism).
This was my mistake for years.
I’d try different supplements hoping they’d fix my stalled progress.
I never addressed the root problem:
My insulin sensitivity was crap from eating carbs all day (bulking), every day.
My metabolism was inflexible.
Stuck in carb-burning mode.
Unable to access fat stores.
Here’s what actually worked:
I stopped buying supplements.
(Okay, I kept protein powder for convenience and fish oil for general health. But everything else went.)
Instead, I focused on fixing my metabolic engine:
Step 1: Improved insulin sensitivity
One meal per day with zero carbs (usually dinner).
This gave my body 14-16 hours every night without insulin spikes.
Allowing my cells to re-sensitize to insulin.
Step 2: Built lean muscle
Muscle is the primary site of glucose disposal.
More muscle = better insulin sensitivity.
Training 4x per week with muscle-centric suspension training.
Building lean muscle in 30-40 minute sessions.
Each pound of muscle I added improved my metabolic function.
Fast forward to today:
At 38, I’m leaner and more muscular than at 28 when I was taking 20+ supplements.
Not because I found the magic pill.
But because I fixed my metabolic engine.
Now my body actually USES the food I eat instead of storing it as fat.
This is what most people don’t understand:
Your body already has everything it needs to build muscle and burn fat.
It’s an incredibly sophisticated machine.
But if the machine is broken (insulin resistance, poor metabolic flexibility), no amount of supplements will help.
Fix the machine first.
Then everything else becomes easier.
That’s why my Lean Lifestyle Nutrition Blueprint teaches this complete approach.
It comes free with all my Suspension Trainer Programs.
Stop wasting money on supplements.
Fix your metabolic engine first.

P.S.
The supplement industry is worth $140+ billion globally. They make money selling you solutions to problems that don’t require supplements. Fat burners don’t work if your insulin sensitivity is broken. Save your money. Fix the root cause.
P.P.S.
I’m not saying you should never use supplements. They do work, but they are about 5% of the health and fitness pie. Nutrition and training make up the 95%. Fix the 95% first then add on the attention to detail stuff: supplements.
