For the longest time, I thought the key to building lean muscle was simple:
do more reps.
More exercises.
More sets.
More workout time.
More equipment.
It felt productive.
Like if I just kept adding to my workout routine, I’d eventually break through and see the transformation I wanted.
But after 8+ years of chasing more in the gym world, I realised something:
I didn’t need more.
I needed to use what I already had better.
Because most people trying to build lean muscle with a suspension trainer don’t fail because they lack equipment or exercises.
They fail because they don’t fully apply the right technique to what they already have.
Here’s what I mean:
I used to spend hours at the gym obsessing over rep counts and new exercises…
Thinking that was the missing piece.
But looking back?
I had already learned the fundamentals of muscle building…
I just wasn’t using them properly.
Instead of mastering how to actually feel my muscles working during each rep…
I kept jumping to the next exercise, collecting more workout routines, and overcomplicating everything.
I was doing “Movement-Centric Technique”:
Mindlessly pushing, pulling, and hanging
Just moving through exercises without any real connection to what my muscles were doing.
So, I stopped.
I quit chasing more reps and more exercises.
And instead focused on doing LESS with better technique.
At first, it felt weird, like I was doing less work and somehow cheating.
But then everything started clicking into place.
- Instead of struggling through 16 reps that barely challenged my muscles, I finally started feeling 8 slow, controlled reps create a powerful burn in exactly the right place.
- Instead of wasting time waiting for gym equipment and comparing myself to others, I started seeing tangible improvements using just my suspension trainer from home.
- Instead of constantly searching for the “perfect” workout plan, I saw real results by sticking to Muscle-Centric Technique: isolating each muscle and maintaining constant tension throughout every single rep.
That’s when I realised:
Most people trying to build lean muscle don’t need more exercises or more gym time.
They need to stop mindlessly moving through reps and actually connect with their muscles during every exercise.
It’s not about how many reps you do.
It’s about how long that muscle is placed under constant tension within those reps.
Think about it…
Would you rather do 16 reps of a TRX Chest Press with each rep taking 2 seconds (32 seconds total tension)…
Or 8 reps with each rep taking 6 seconds (48 seconds total tension)?
Science tells us muscle is built from time under tension.
So the answer is obvious:
8 slow, controlled reps with the right technique will build more lean muscle than 16 fast, mindless reps.
But you can’t just slow down and expect results.
You need to learn and practice how to:
✓ Isolate the specific muscle you’re targeting (so other muscles don’t steal the load)
✓ Lock your body in stone (eliminating momentum and keeping tension on the right muscle)
✓ Maintain the SQUEEZE throughout the entire range of motion (especially at the top and bottom)
✓ Use your mind-muscle connection (turning workouts into moving meditation)
This is what I call Muscle-Centric Suspension Training Technique.
And it’s completely different from the Movement-Centric approach you see in every TRX app, YouTube video, and group fitness class.
It’s focusing on quality, rather than quantity.
If you feel like you’re constantly working out but not seeing results…
Maybe you don’t need more exercises or more gym time.
Maybe you just need to commit to fully using the right technique with what you already have.

Andreas, a busy dad of three with zero time, told me: “By getting into that meditative state you talk about, I get to strengthen my body while calming my mind. It sets me up for being the best dad I can be.”
That’s the power of Muscle-Centric Technique combined with the mind-muscle connection. It doesn’t just transform y
