Struggling to stay motivated to exercise from home?
I get it. It’s a common challenge, especially if you’re juggling a busy job, family responsibilities, and all the stresses of daily life…
But here’s the thing: working out from home doesn’t have to feel like a chore or just another task on your never-ending to-do list.
In fact, it can become the BEST part of your day – a time to connect with your body and re-focus your mind away from the stressors of a hectic life.
I once spoke with Andreas, a member of my Fitness Freedom Athletes community. He’s a busy dad with two young (and wonderful) kids who, in his words, “keep him on his toes!”
And as a father myself, I understand how hard it can be to carve out “me time” when you’re constantly pulled in a million directions.
But Andreas discovered a game-changing mindset shift that not only helped him stay motivated to work out at home with his suspension trainer – it transformed his mental well-being too.
He started viewing his workouts as a form of MEDITATION.
Now, I know what you’re thinking… “Meditation? I thought we were talking about exercise!”
But stick with me for a second…
When you truly connect with your body during a workout and focus on the muscle you’re targeting, you’re directing all your attention to a single point of focus for an extended period of time.
That’s essentially the core principle of meditation.
Instead of letting your mind race with thoughts of grocery lists, work deadlines, or what to make for dinner… you simply tune in to the physical sensations of your workout.
Feel your muscles contract and lengthen with each rep…
Visualise the target area working…
Embrace the burn. SQUEEZE like your results depend on it (they do!)…
This mind-muscle connection doesn’t just enhance your gains physically – it’s awesome for your mental state too.
As Andreas put it, once he started approaching his workouts as a time for HIMSELF…
He’d finish each session feeling stronger in his body AND clearer in his mind.
He’d start his days grounded, energised, and ready to show up as the best possible version of himself for his kids.
Talk about a ripple effect…
I’ve experienced this powerful mind-body benefit in my own home workouts too. As a new dad, my exercise time is precious. It’s often the ONLY quiet “me time” I get in a day!
So rather than viewing workouts as another chore to check off, I embrace them as a non-negotiable self-care practice.
That 20, 30, or 45 minutes is MINE – a time to meditate and build lean muscle, the double whammy effect.
And you know what? It makes me a better father, partner, and coach.
When I take care of myself first, I’m more patient, present, and energised for everyone and everything else.
So if you struggle with staying motivated to work out at home, I invite you to try this perspective shift.
Approach your next session as a meditation in motion.
Focus on your breath. Pay attention to how your body moves and muscles engage.
Place your mind inside your muscles!
Most importantly, protect this time for YOURSELF and treat it as a priority. You can’t pour from an empty cup, as the saying goes…
Make your workouts a form of moving meditation, and watch how the habit sticks.
I know this mindset isn’t always easy, especially if you’re conditioned to put yourself last on the priority list.
But take it from busy dads like Andreas and myself – it’s infinitely worth it.
