I wasn’t supposed to succeed at building lean muscle with just a suspension trainer.
I didn’t have the traditional equipment, the gym setup, or even the “approval” of my fellow trainers.
And for a long time, even I struggled to believe it was possible.
I told myself I’d never get the same results as I did in the gym with all that heavy equipment.
That I didn’t have the weights, the machines, the “proper” setup they kept telling me I needed.
That maybe building serious lean muscle just required being chained to a gym 5-6 days a week.
But then something happened…
I was three months into traveling South America with nothing but a backpack and TRX suspension trainer.
I stopped focusing on what I lacked (no gym, no weights, no fancy equipment) and started focusing on what I could actually do with my body and these simple straps.
Instead of worrying about not having heavy dumbbells…
I doubled down on learning how to isolate each muscle using what I call “Muscle-Centric Technique.”
I started taking small steps: testing, documenting, perfecting the technique.
I slowed everything down.
I focused on feeling every single muscle fiber contract and stretch.
I used my mind-muscle connection to place maximum tension on one muscle at a time, rather than mindlessly moving weight from point A to point B.
And little by little, things started shifting.
My physique actually improved.
My nagging shoulder pain disappeared.
I felt functionally stronger for real life, not just “gym life.”
I wasn’t an overnight success.
But one day, I looked up and realised…
I had done the thing my peers said was impossible.
I’d built more quality lean muscle in three months with a suspension trainer than I had in years of ego-driven gym workouts.
Here’s what I learned:
Your muscles don’t know where you are or what you’re holding.
All they know is the tension you can place upon them through a range of motion.
That’s it.
The whole “you MUST use a gym to build muscle” belief that trapped me for years.
