If I lost everything tomorrow and had to rebuild my body from zero…
Here’s exactly what I’d do:
Back when I first started as a personal trainer in 2008, I spent way too much time chasing heavy weights and gym culture…
Thinking it was the only key to building muscle.
I followed the “lift heavier, get bigger” approach because everyone in the industry said it was the way to go.
I wasted YEARS doing movement-centric technique: mindlessly pressing, pulling, and hanging…
Cranking out reps as fast as possible, letting my ego lead, comparing myself to others in the gym.
When I should’ve been focused on actually connecting with my muscles and creating real tension.
If I could do it all over again, I’d skip those 8+ years of struggle and go straight to this:
First, I’d focus on muscle-centric technique from day one.
That alone would’ve saved me years of spinning my wheels and countless injuries from lifting too heavy with terrible form.
(It’s taken me years to rebalance my body and become pain-free from all that heavy ego lifting.)
I’d lighten the weight and instead of sharing the load across multiple muscles (which gives each muscle a weak growth stimulus)…
I’d isolate each target muscle using slow, controlled movements.
I’d squeeze the muscle powerfully throughout every rep….
Placing my mind inside that muscle…
Feeling it contract and stretch.
Because your muscles don’t know what you’re holding or where you are.
They only know the tension you place on them through a range of motion.
Then, I’d ignore the gym entirely and double down on training from home with just a suspension trainer.
Instead of wasting 30-40 minutes driving to a crowded gym, waiting for equipment, and getting distracted by the ego-driven environment…
I’d get better results in less time from my living room.
No commute.
No crowds and ego.
No comparing myself to others.
Just me, my suspension trainer, and complete internal focus on my body.
And finally, I’d make sure I understood insulin sensitivity and metabolic flexibility from day one.
Because looking back, that’s what actually made the difference between struggling to lose belly fat versus transforming my body sustainably.
It’s not what you eat… It’s how effectively your body uses what you eat.
When I finally learned to optimise my nutrition timing and pairing to improve my insulin sensitivity, everything changed.
My body started burning carbs during workouts and fat at rest.
My energy levels doubled.
The stubborn belly fat finally melted off.
Most people waste months, sometimes years, doing movement-centric training, following fad diets, and believing they NEED a gym to build muscle.
Simply because they don’t know what actually matters.
But if you know where to start, what technique to use, and how to fuel your body properly…
You can skip the struggle and start seeing visible changes in the mirror within weeks.
