I got asked a question yesterday…
“Which builds more muscle – a suspension trainer or a resistance band?”
I used to ask similar questions when I was stuck in gym culture.
Always looking for the “best” tool.
The perfect machine.
The magic weight.
But here’s the truth that changed everything for me…
Your muscles don’t know what tool you’re using.
They only know tension.
That’s it.
Whether you’re holding a dumbbell, suspension trainer handles, or resistance bands…
Your muscles only respond to the tension you place on them through a range of motion.
So what’s the real difference-maker?
It’s all in your mind…
Specifically, your mind-muscle connection.
Let me explain.
Years ago, I was that “gym bro” focused on all the wrong things.
How heavy could I lift?
Did I look impressive while doing it?
I was completely externally focused.
And my results were mediocre at best.
When I left the gym behind and started training with just a suspension trainer, I was forced to go internal.
No more ego.
No more distractions.
Just me, connecting with my body in ways I never had before.
I began to focus on the feeling of my muscles stretching and contracting powerfully.
I used super slow tempos to maintain constant tension.
Creating mind-muscle connection through complete internal focus.
And guess what happened?
I built more quality muscle in 6 months than I had in years at the gym.
Workouts became a form of meditation that transformed not only my physique but also my mental well-being.
It sounds crazy, even ‘woo woo,’ but it’s true.
The real question to be asking is:
“Which tool will help me connect with my unique body accessibly and sustainably?”
This is why I’ve built my entire approach around what I call “muscle-centric technique” versus the “movement-centric technique” most people use.
One isolated muscle taking all the load creates a powerful lean muscle and strength growth stimulus.
That’s muscle-centric technique.
It takes internal focus, but it doesn’t require heavy weights to build lean muscle, strength, and mobility.
Just a suspension trainer or band – whichever works best for you.
