Saw something on Reddit that took me right back to 2014.
Someone posted a rant in a fitness forum:
“I already have so little motivation to workout”
Hits home.
Top comment?
“Welcome to gym culture.”
I laughed.
Then I felt a bit sad.
Because that was my life for 8+ years.
Every. Single. Day.
Not just as a gym member.
As a personal trainer working IN the gym.
I watched this happen constantly:
Busy adults showing up after work, already exhausted.
Waiting 15 minutes for equipment.
Feeling judged by the gym bros.
Comparing themselves to everyone around them.
Leaving more stressed than when they arrived.
And I’d try to motivate them.
But inside, I was thinking:
“Why are we doing this to ourselves?”
The thing that really got to me was the energy.
The gym environment forces you to be externally focused.
You’re watching what others are doing.
Checking yourself in mirrors.
Making sure you look like you know what you’re doing.
Worrying someone’s judging your form.
Wondering if you’re using equipment “wrong.”
Even when you’re trying to focus on your workout, there’s always something pulling your attention outward.
The guy grunting loudly on the bench press.
The woman doing Instagram videos in the squat rack.
The group of lads chatting loudly between sets.
The music you didn’t choose blasting through speakers.
How are you supposed to connect with your body in that environment?
You can’t.
At least I couldn’t.
I’d finish gym sessions feeling scattered….
Distracted…
Like I’d ticked a box but hadn’t really done anything meaningful.
I thought that was just what working out felt like.
Fast forwrd to today…
Now, it’s just me and the suspension trainer.
No mirrors. No other people. No equipment to wait for. No one to impress.
Without all the external noise and distraction, I focus internally on my body.
Actually paying attention to the muscle I’m working.
Feeling every muscular contraction at the top.
Every stretch at the bottom.
Placing my mind inside the muscle.
It sounds a bit woo-woo, but it completely changed everything.
Workouts stopped being about reps and weights and “looking strong.”
They’ve became about connection and awareness.
Meditation through movement.
I finish 30-minute sessions feeling calm. Centered. More present.
The opposite of how I felt leaving the gym.
And my body?
It’s transformed faster than it ever did with gym access.
I’m in better shape than when I was training 90 minutes a day in London gyms.
More defined. Better posture. Stronger. Healthier joints.
With less time, less equipment, and way less stress.
The lesson wasn’t just “you don’t need a gym to build muscle.”
It was “the gym environment might actually be STOPPING you from getting optimal results.”
Because optimal results require:
- Internal focus (not external comparison)
- Mind-muscle connection (not ego lifting)
- Calm presence (not stressed distraction)
- Time under tension (not just moving weight around)
- Connection with your body (not performing for others)
None of that is possible in a crowded gym.
At least it wasn’t for me.
And judging by that Reddit post, it’s not possible for most people.
I’m a busy dad running a business from home.
My suspension trainer hangs on the door in my office. Two feet from my desk.
I don’t have to:
- Commute anywhere
- Wait for equipment
- Deal with crowds
- Feel judged or watched
- Work around other people’s schedules
- Pay monthly membership fees
- Wonder if the gym will be too busy today
I just turn around, do a focused 30-40 minute workout in my own space, and get on with my day.
Feeling calmer, stronger, and more centered.
This is fitness freedom.
Not just the freedom from gyms.
But the freedom to actually connect with your body without all the noise and distraction.
I’ve taught this approach to over 8,000 people now.
Busy professionals like you who:
- Don’t have time for gym commutes
- Feel intimidated by gym culture
- Want to train on their own schedule
- Prefer working out in their own space
- Value internal focus over external comparison
The feedback I get most often?
“I finally understand what a workout should feel like.”
“I’m getting better results at home than I ever got at the gym.”
“I don’t miss the gym at all. This is so much better.”
“I look forward to my workouts now instead of dreading them.”
Because they’ve discovered what I discovered in 2016:
The gym isn’t necessary.
Sometimes it’s actually the problem.
That Reddit poster probably joined a gym thinking it was his only option.
Maybe spent $80+ on a membership he’s not using because waiting for equipment and dealing with crowds isn’t worth it.
He’s got other options.
So do you.

P.S.
I haven’t set foot in a traditional gym since 2016. Almost 9 years. And I’m in better shape now at 38 than I was at 28 spending 90 minutes a day in gyms. That’s not a coincidence. The environment matters as much as the training.
